If we want our research and clinical services to be relevant to patients, then we need to understand their opinions and priorities.
A forum where people speak freely on medical issues is the social media platform X (formerly twitter).
We searched X for tweets regarding life after stroke, collated them, and performed an analysis to look for recurring themes.
Messages that came across included the need to maintain hope, the importance of peer support, and using social media as a means to share knowledge.
The project has highlighted what stroke survivors really think about their recovery, but also demonstrates that social media can be used as a tool for qualitative research.
